Applied Linguistics in Translation Studies
Program Description
Graduate Profile
Professional translators are characterized by their ability to faithfully transcribe written messages from one language to another, thanks to their understanding of the required lexicons and styles. In addition, they demonstrate a high level of mastery in their working languages and possess extensive extralinguistic and cultural knowledge, with a constant awareness of the need to constantly improve their professional work.
Professional Skills
A) Translation
· To faithfully understand and convey the meaning of a written message from one language to another
· To use the most suitable computational tools and information sources available
Within the field of Translation, the professional translator must have the ability to recognize and comply with the stages of the translation process and be able to solve the problems emerging from this process. To carry out this task, they need to demonstrate competences, at a professional level, in the following areas: written communication; pragmatic and contrastive analysis; expression techniques, and mastery in different cultural codes, both in the source language and the target language.
B) Communication
· To fluently express oneself in oral and written form in the languages used professionally
In the field of Communication, the translator as a linguistic and cultural mediator, has knowledge of languages and cultural elements. This expertise allows them to act in commercial situations or others, such as interactions with foreign clients and interlocutors from other countries at daily work in any labor sector.
C) Interpretation
· To accurately interpret auditory information from one language to another
The translator, in their role as an interpreter, must demonstrate professional mastery in communicative competencies and in their working languages, extralinguistic knowledge, oratory skills, and cognitive abilities necessary for the oral translation process.
D) Research
· To apply linguistic and translation research methodologies
The research process requires starting from one’s own intellectual curiosity, which is demonstrated through the location, selection, processing, and systematization of information. The translator must posses a methodological perspective capable of giving coherence and scientific rigor to the typical working modalities of their tasks.

FACULTY TEAM
Our faculty team consists of a total of 10 full-time academics and 31 adjunct academics. Out of a total of 41 academics, 30 posses a postgraduate specializations, corresponding to a 76% of the total. Currently, the team has 11 PhD, 20 Masters and 10 Bachelor degrees.
GRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE
The Graduate Studies Committee is the academic entity responsible for the curricular operation of the Applied Linguistics in Translation Studies program and supports the functions of the Program Director. FULL-TIME PROFESSORS
The program includes the participation of 10 full-time academics from the Department of Linguistics and Literature. The academics are ranked as assistant and associate professors, 5 with PhD degree and 5 with Master’s degree. Of the latter, 2 professors are currently pursuing studies to obtain a PhD degree.
Dr (c). Marcela Contreras T.
PhD Candidate in Philosophy, Art and Critical Thought (The European Graduate School, EGS), Master’s degree in Higher Education Teaching (Universidad Andrés Bello) and English – Spanish Translator (Universidad de Concepción). Since 1994, she works as a freelance translator in the fields of education, productive processes, and medicine (clinical studies). She also has served as lecturer from the English – Spanish Translation area from 2003. Her areas of interest in research are translation training and specialized translation registry.
Dr. Adolfo M. García.
PhD in Literature, Postdoctoral by the Institute of Cognitive Neurology (INECO, Argentina), English teacher and Technical-Scientific English translator. He specializes in language and communication neuroscience. He serves as Associated Investigator at the Faculty of Humanities (Universidad de Santiago de Chile), Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Center (Universidad de San Andrés, Argentina), Senior Atlantic Fellow from the Global Brain Health Institute (University of California, San Francisco), CONICET Researcher, Neurolinguistics lecturer (Universidad Nacional de Cuyo), honorary member from the Cognitive Neuroscience Center (Universidad de La Laguna, Spain) and High-Level Talent assigned by the Ministry of Science and Technology (China). Additionally, he is the founder and Director of the Master in Language and Cognition program (Universidad Nacional del Cuyo). He is also President of the “Translation, Research, Empiricism, Cognition” (TREC) International Thematic Network. He also took training programs at the University of New York and Rice University (USA). Currently, he coordinates research projects in over 10 countries.
Mg. Riko Iizumi.
Master’s degree in Education, Educational Design and Japanese Language Teaching as a Second Language (Yokohama National University, Japan). She dictates courses of Japanese language, especially Conversational Japanese, Japanese Oral and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension in Japanese at the Applied Linguistics in Translation Studies program. Her research is dedicated to the acquisition of second language (ASL), communicative and interactive language teaching methods and the teaching of Japanese culture and language.
Dr. (c) Ángela Morales S.
PhD Candidate in Philology (National University of Distance Education, UNED). Master’s degree in Linguistics with mention in Hispanic Sociolinguistics (Universidad de Santiago de Chile) and English-Spanish Translator (Universidad de Concepción). She has offered translation services to national and international companies. In addition, she has a Diploma in University Teaching and Research & Innovation, both from the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. Lecturer in the Applied Linguistics in English – Portuguese/Japanese Translation Studies program since 2007, where she dictates courses related to Traductology, English - Spanish – English translation practices and English – Spanish Contrastive Grammar. She also acts as Academic Advisor and Translation Coordinator.
Mg. Édinson Muñoz A.
Master’s degree in Linguistics, mention in Hispanic Sociolinguistics (Universidad de Santiago de Chile). Diploma Course in Japanese Teaching as 2nd language (The Japan Foundation Japanese – Language Institute) and University Teaching (Universidad de Santiago de Chile). His research is devoted to comparing syntactic complexity and the cognitive processes involved in the reading of Japanese as 2nd language. He is part of the Latin American Association for Asian and African Studies (ALADAA), and Coordinator of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Administrative Committee in Chile. Currently, he is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Program of Experimental Research in Communication & Cognition (PIIEECC), the Department of Linguistics and Literature’s Representative Counsellor in the Faculty Council and member of the Evaluation Committee of Graduate Programs (CEEP). During his career, he served as Director of the Department of Linguistics and Literature twice, his first term on 2017-2019 and the second on 2019-2021.
Dra. Raquel Rubio M.
PhD in Linguistics (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). Former researcher at the College of Arts & Science in the University of Tokyo (2001-2006). She has dedicated her career to Spanish and Japanese language teaching in Japan and Chile for over ten years. She also has participated in various Spanish and Japanese teaching congresses. She is a member of the Association of Latin-American Linguistics and Philology (ALFAL), the Japan Association of Hispanists and the Spanish Teaching Research Group (GIDE). Her areas of interests in research are: Teaching of Foreign Languages, Discourse Analysis, Japanese Culture, Interculturality and Language. Currently, she is the Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Linguistics and Literature.
Dr. Néstor Singer C.
PhD in Translation & Intercultural Studies MA TESOL (Teacher Education) from the University of Manchester and Translator with mention in English and Japanese (Universidad de Santiago de Chile). Additionally, he holds a Diploma in Spanish as Second Language (Universidad Católica de Chile) and University Teaching (Universidad de Santiago de Chile). During his academic career, he has worked as English and translation instructor in different educational institutions in Chile, focusing particularly on language teaching for the professional training of translators. His research and publications are focused in the Psychology of Translation, Translator’s Identity and Translation & Second Language Teaching in translation programs. He is a member of the Interdisciplinary Program for Experimental Research in Communiaction and Cognition (PIIECC) Pand Associate Member of the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies (CTIS) from The University of Manchester. He is the current Director of the Department of Linguistics and Literature (2023-2025).

Our team is composed of 31 adjunct professors to fulfill the program's teaching duties. Out of the 31, 6 have a PhD and 15 a Master's degree, which means that 68% of the total of adjunct professors have postgraduate studies. The virtualization team is responsible of supporting the virtualization process in every program from the faculty. It is composed of a multidisciplinary team comprised by lecturers and instructional and graphic designers.
This team oversees the creation of strategies to assist lecturers in the virtualization of their courses by distributing support material, providing virtualization training activities and coordinating training instances to further improve virtual teaching directed towards the lecturers from the faculty.

Outreach activities, like conferences with foreign guests, language competitions, foreign languages and translation conferences, master classes, translation sessions, diplomatic visits, cultural fairs and other events. Most of these activities are carried out in collaboration with the Japanese, Brazilian and Portuguese Embassies, in addition to other institutions like the Japan Foundation, Camões Institute, and the Brazil-Chile Cultural Centre.
