Master’s Degree in Latin American and Chilean Literature
- Develop own lines, deepening and stimulating the production of new knowledge, based on the emphasis of the Program in Latin American and Chilean Literature.
- Promote different areas of Literary studies linked to the different geopolitical spaces that Latin America implies today, incorporating cultural specificities and heterogeneities.
- Deepen the different theoretical and methodological approaches based on Latin American and Chilean Literature.
- Enable the graduate for the continuation of Doctoral studies.
- Develop literary research and/or teaching, in the areas proper to the Master’s, that incorporate the critical and theoretical-literary practices worked on in the Program.
- Evaluate, criticize and position themselves in a well-founded way on the topics promoted by the Program of Latin American and Chilean Literature.
- Carry out literary research incorporating knowledge and problems related to cultural history, social knowledge, anthropology, and the human sciences that have constituted thought in Latin America, using the conceptual and methodological resources of the discipline.
According to the Study Plan of the Master’s in Latin American and Chilean Literature, the Program has a training trajectory that includes a total of seven subjects, where the general ones are:
- General Subject – Pre-Hispanic and Colonial Literature
- General Subject - 19th Century Literature
- General Subject - 20th and 21st Century Literature
- General Subject - Epistemology and Methodology of Literary Research
- General Subject - Thesis
In addition to the general subjects, the student must take two elective subjects; for which they can choose between topics such as: Theories about Literature, Gender and Sexualities in Latin American Literature, Memory and Testimony, Indigenous Discourses, Literary Avant-Gardes, Critical and Literary Thought in the Americas, and Drama.
Currently, the chairs that students can choose are:
- Elective Subject - From the high peaks, Darío, Mistral, Vallejo and Neruda
- Elective Subject - Dynamics in Colonial narrative (16th to 18th centuries)
- Elective Subject - Literatures and Latin American borders
- Elective Subject - Current narratives of the Amazon Elective Subject - Current critical thinking from Latin America
- Elective Subject - Current poetry of Mapuche origin in Chile
- Elective Subject - Contemporary Aymara poetry Elective Subject - Latin American Drama
Degree Thesis
The end-of-academic activity consists of developing an individual and tutored research, on some relevant aspect of literary knowledge, and whose results imply a deepening of the field of literary studies. Finally, the curricular trajectory will culminate with the oral and written presentation of the Thesis.

Admission Requirements
Considering the General Regulation of Academic Master’s at the University of Santiago de Chile, the Internal Rules of the Master’s Program in Latin American and Chilean Literature, and the Study Plan of the Program with respect to admission, applicants must accredit the fulfillment of the following formal requirements:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or professional title, of at least eight semesters duration in Chilean or foreign universities recognized by the State. In all cases, the Program Committee will evaluate the applicant’s academic training in the specific areas of literary studies, through an interview with two members of the CPM.
- The Program may receive applications throughout the academic year, which will be made through the web portal of the Graduate Directorate https://www.postgrado.usach.cl/
Selection System
Applications to the Master’s program in Latin American and Chilean Literature are received according to the following calendar:
- Applications are received throughout the year through the Graduate Directorate’s web portal. However, applications received until the last working day of September enter the selection process for the following academic year. (Applications received after this month are considered for the following academic year)
- According to the General Regulation of Academic Master’s and the Internal Rules of the Program, applicants must complete the application form as an application for admission to the Master’s in Literature and accredit the background indicated therein: degree or title certificate, concentration of grades in higher education, two academic recommendations, birth certificate, a Curriculum Vitae.
- Subsequently, the CPM will carry out a pre-selection based on these backgrounds and the pre-selected applicants will have to undergo a personal interview, which is carried out by the Director plus a regular academic of the faculty and in it the following will be considered:
- Level of knowledge in the area of the Program.
- Creativity in the field of specialty.
- Motivations regarding their decision to pursue postgraduate studies in the specialty of literature.
- The CPM will analyze and evaluate the applicant’s background, issuing a judgment regarding the data provided in the application request, assigning a score to the factors included in the personal interview and in the Concentration of Grades of the Undergraduate Program presented.
After evaluating the background and the interview, it will be proposed to the corresponding authority to process the acceptance to the Program of the selected applicants and the decision will be communicated to the applicant.
It should be noted that until 2016, admission to the Master’s in Latin American and Chilean Literature was carried out semi-annually. This modality was changed to annual admission from 2017.
Receipt of Application Background
The University establishes the application period until September of each year. Applications received outside of this month will be considered for the following year.

The virtualization area is the area responsible for supporting the virtualization process of all faculty programs. It is made up of a multidisciplinary team composed of teachers, instructional designers, and graphic designers.
This team oversees creating strategies to accompany teachers in the virtualization of their courses, through the dissemination of help materials, the realization of training for the virtualization of subjects and the coordination of training instances to support online teaching directed towards the faculty's professors.

The second facet is the theses of our students, which consists of a final academic activity that involves developing an individual and tutored research on some relevant aspect of literary knowledge, and whose results imply a deepening of the field of literary studies.
According to current regulations, the student has two semesters to complete their degree process and present the oral defense of their degree exam.
