Integral Training Courses (Languages and Cultures)

The Department of Linguistics and Literature specializes in teaching foreign languages at different levels of linguistic competence according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or its equivalent in the corresponding languages. We also offer introductory courses in intercultural studies. We invite undergraduate students interested in academic exchanges at foreign universities or who wish to deepen their cultural studies, to review the course offerings with their respective schedules for the second semester of 2023 by entering here:

Foreign Languages
 
GERMAN I and II
 
Professor: María Schindler
 
The main objective is to transfer basic knowledge of the language to the student to cope with everyday situations effectively, to be able to dialogue with others and make themselves understood. As well as understanding simple instructions and texts.
 
FRENCH I and II
 
Professor: Dorine Levy
 
This course aims to develop understanding in the French language and achieve speaking and writing at level A1 and A1+. It also includes understanding basic aspects of French culture and thus appreciating its contribution to our country. This course is offered at two levels.
 
Professor: Bernardita Iturrieta
 
This course aims to develop understanding in the French language and achieve speaking and writing at level A1 and A1+. It also includes understanding basic aspects of French culture and thus appreciating its contribution to our country. This course is offered at levels I and II.
 
ITALIAN I and II
 
Professor: Nadia Arnoldi
 
This course offers an approach to the systematic study of Italian at the initial level. Acquisition of elementary linguistic knowledge that puts the student in a position to understand and produce both oral and written messages corresponding to level A1 and A1+.
 
RUSSIAN
 
Professor: Nazdia Agapoba
 
This course provides students with basic orientation (A1 and A1+) in the Russian language environment; ensures the establishment of the first bases of the language, facilitates simple reading with the support of dictionaries; delivers elementary knowledge of Russian culture and prepares for the continuation of language study in higher units.
 
PORTUGUESE I, II, III
 
Professor: Constanza Vargas
 
Two courses are offered at level A1 and A2 to develop basic linguistic competence in the student so that they can understand both written and oral, simple texts in Portuguese. In this way, students acquire basic structures to start communicating.

Portuguese I course of level A1 to develop basic competences and abilities in the Portuguese language both in the written and oral part. In this way, students acquire basic structures to start communicating.
 
JAPANESE I and II
 
Professor: Tamara Montero
 
In this course, the base of basic grammar notions is built that will enable the student in the oral and written mastery of the various pattern structures, expression, nuances, etc. of communication in the Japanese language. The course also provides abundant explanations about cultural contexts with the support of videos and available digital resources. This course is offered at two levels.
 
CHINESE I
 
Professor: Juan Iturriaga
 
The objective of this course is to learn, individually and collaboratively, the basics of the Chinese Mandarin language, maintaining a neat pronunciation of the language and a notion of the fundamental principles of Chinese writing, in addition to a marked interest in the millenary and contemporary culture of the Asian giant.
 

Spanish as a foreign language (E/LE)

Spanish as a foreign language (E/LE) is an integrative program designed to introduce students with no pervious Spanish language experience to the customs, lifestyle and particularities of Chilean Spanish. Taught by highly qualified professionals who hold degrees in Linguistics and Spanish teaching, students are introduced to Chilean culture in a highly integrative fashion. Students are first taught how to complete simple tasks such as introducing themselves, asking directions or going shopping, i.e. linguistic activities at level A1. As the program progresses, students learn how to carry out more complex tasks such as speaking about past and future events at level A2. At the end of the program, students should be able to speak comfortably in most of the basic social circumstances that they face.

Course: ORAL EXPRESSION AND ARGUMENTATION

At the end of this course, students will be able to recognize and develop techniques and strategies for oral communication and argumentation, through the construction, analysis, and evaluation of presentations in which vocal, gestural, bodily, and rhetorical tools are exercised.
 
Intercultural Studies
 
CHINA, JAPAN, KOREA AND THEIR PROJECTIONS IN THE 21st CENTURY
 
Professor: Dr. Mónica Ahumada
 
The course seeks to provide analytical tools on the countries of East Asia, China, Japan, and Korea to understand their prominence in the 21st century as first-rate actors in the global context. This will allow students to acquire knowledge for their professional future, understanding the profound transformations that are occurring in terms of innovation and technology, as well as in the culture of each of the countries mentioned, covering literature, artistic expressions, and sites declared World Heritage.
 
CULTURES OF ASIA

This course presents a general introduction to Asian cultures, especially China and Japan. It addresses the history of these nations, as well as how they currently act on the world stage from a perspective of international relations.
 
ART, AESTHETICS, AND VISUAL CULTURE IN ASIA
 
Professor: Matilde Gálvez
 
This subject establishes a journey through the different cultures of East Asia, such as China, Korea, and Japan, emphasizing the visual arts and visual culture of each country. The course is developed based on three thematic axes that are pictorial traditions associated with forms of thought (Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism), visual arts and politics, and contemporary popular culture.
 
PERFORMANCE, HISTORY, AND POLITICS
 
Professor: Carla Achiardi
 
This course aims to know through research, analysis, and experience, a contemporary artistic expression such as action art or performance, in its historical-political dimension and recognizing its characteristics of conceptual, procedural, ephemeral, and interdisciplinary art, centrally housed in the artist's body.
