Master in Linguistics
Program Description
This academic program is structured to achieve a master’s degree in linguistics. It is composed by two specializations: Spanish Language Sociolinguistics in America (SEA) and English Language Learning Theory (TALi).
Overall Objective:
Contributing to the preparation of human and academic resources. This process is issued from a standpoint that combines the problems with the potentials of human language to contribute in the fields of education and research.
Specific Objectives:
• Proportioning a solid basis in areas related to the study of language structure and functioning, in a personal-level as well as social-level.
• Providing a wide overview on methodologies and analytic strategies to solve linguistic problems.
• Promoting research on linguistics in order to create interdisciplinary projects for the development of the country.
Graduate Skills:
• To be capable of creating teams destined to research projects or applied linguistics interventions.
• To be capable of displaying and transmitting linguistic knowledge on different levels and situations. Particularly in different types of spoken and written contexts, such as bibliographic reviews, presentations, and articles.
• To incorporate the current disciplinary knowledge on social and teaching problems resolution in different contexts.
• To be capable of coming up with new solutions to language-related problems and how they are connected to society and culture. A skill issued from a standpoint that emphasizes dedication and solidarity.
Duration:
This program is comprised of 5 semesters, half-time. 34 TEL credits and 75 SCT-Chile credits. ¿What are SCT-Chile Credits?

Common courses are focused on research. There are a total of 5 courses, including Specialization Seminar and thesis.
Speciality courses deepen the knowledge on the chosen field. There are a total of 4 courses.
During the first semester, the students can update or complement their undergraduate formation through optional courses focused on issues relevant to the development of the discipline with a meticulous review related to the field of interest.

Resolution for the current study plan.
Anyone interested in postulating to the program should consider the following matters:
Documentation
- Professional degree or title legalized by a notary.
- Higher education Transcript.
- Two recommendations from academics specialized in the discipline.
- Resumee.
- Birth Certificate.
- Application letter addressed to the Head of the Program.
- Online application form in the Postgraduate Direction web site. Please, send it as an application for admission and attach the previously mentioned documents. The program will conduct a pre-selection based in those precedents.
Interview
The preselected applicants will participate in an interview with academics from the program, in which the applicants can give more relevant information about their backgrouos.
English Language Proficiency
- English Language Learning Theory (TALi) applicants must undertake a writing test in which they have to write an academic essay in English.
- The Spanish Language Sociolinguistics in America (SEA) applicants must answer an English comprehension test in Spanish.

The virtualization team is responsible of supporting the virtualization process in every program from the faculty. It is composed of a multidisciplinary team comprised by lecturers and instructional and graphic designers.
This team oversees the creation of strategies to assist lecturers in the virtualization of their courses by distributing support material, providing virtualization training activities and coordinating training instances to further improve virtual teaching directed towards the lecturers from the faculty.

Published on August 21st: Our student Loreto Aguilera exposed at the First International Meeting of Oral and Written Discourse Analysis Research Group (GIADI), organized by the Autonomous University of Querétaro. Her presentation was related to the current state of her thesis: Vowel elements in Chilean Spanish: Perceptual discrimination and influence in vowel recognition.
Published on June 30th: Invitation by the master's degree program from Universidad de Chile. Colloquiums and discussion groups on linguistic diversity, rights and politics in the new Constitution.
Published on June 30th: On May 28th, Isaías Reyes successfully defended his thesis: Conveying meaning through Suprasegmentals. A comparative study on the use of Suprasegmentals between Chilean EFL teachers of higher education and English Native speakers when producing structurally ambiguous sentences. Supervised by Dr. Domingo Román. Evaluated by Dr. Raquel Rubio and Dr. Miguel Farías.
PPublished on May 27th. Today, Constanza Quintero successfully defended her thesis: A multilingual learner's complex and dynamic metacognitive system examined through the reconstruction of his language learning history: a single case study from a socio-cognitive ecological perspective. The examination phase was carried out by an international evaluation team composed of: Dra. Tammy Gregersen (American University of Sharjah) and Dr. Paul Abraham (Simmons University). The research was supervised by Dr. Miguel Farías (USACH). Constanza Quintero passed with top score and there was a complete consensus on the excellent quality of both her presentation and research work. Defense video.
