Field trip to the Liceo de Adultos Herbert Vargas Wallis

The Pedagogy in Spanish program took a field trip to the Liceo de Adultos Herbert Vargas Wallis located inside the Penitentiary of Santiago on Tuesday 23 May. The activity was organized by Professor Miguel Pedraza, with the participation of students from his elective course "Adults Education" and students from Dr. Gisela Watson’s course "Initial Internship I".

Professor Pedraza said: “Field trips, especially to educational institutions, give students a sense of reality, it allows them to strengthen their professional profiles and puts them into perspective about their occupational options. In this case, visiting the Liceo de Adultos Herbert Vargas Wallis led students to discover a different and diverse educational space that operates under critical conditions. It also allowed them to meet a group of teachers characterized by dealing with a professional context for which they weren’t prepared, and with no regular academic offerings. This brings out the main differentiating factor possessed by teachers focused on youth and adults’ education: an unbreakable social and ethical commitment”.

Since 2022, the program has allowed access to unconventional educational spaces for our students, through a development plan with bilateral activities between the educational space and our program. Pedro Andrade, Initial Internship I student, commented: “This visit helped me to learn more about different realities where pedagogic activities take place, in this case, in a setting that reinforces the right to education for all. During this trip I had the chance to interact with the students, and I was pleased to notice their motivated to learn, which makes me value this kind of educational spaces even more”.
